Lindsay Lohan Calls Nicki Minaj Track 'So Cool'

'Thanks for the shout,' starlet tweets about Minaj using her name in song.

Lindsay Lohan doesn't always approve of people using her name as a pop culture reference, but it seems that the starlet doesn't mind a certain New York MC making reference to her in song. Lohan took to Twitter over the weekend to show some love to Nicki Minaj for her track "I Am the Best."

"See, you told me I would lose but I won/ I might cop a million Jimmy Choo's just for fun," Minaj raps on the track. " 'Cause bitches couldn't take what was in me/ Australia, Sydney, might run up in Disney/ Out in L.A. with Lindsay/ Got the eye of the tiger, the lion of Judah/ Now it's me in my time, it's just me in my prime."

"Love Nikki Minaj for the shout on her track 'im the best' xox so cool!" Lohan wrote. "I heart @nickiminaj - thanks for the shout! 'I'm the best' by Nicki Minaj. Check it."

Lohan has become quite the music critic via her Twitter account, giving fans some insight into what she's been listening to since leaving rehab earlier this month. "I love Adele's 'Rumor Has It' off her new record ... Such a good vibe to it ... makes me happy xoxo," she wrote. "I love this track. The XX remix is great too!" she added about the singer's "Rolling in Deep." The starlet also gave props to another song, tweeting, "MUST HAVE DOWNLOAD! Jessie J 'Do It Like a Dude.' Love her!"

Facebook to empower its massive mobile platform with HTML5

Facebook, which now has 125 million active iPhone and Android users, will set its focus on the mobile part of its platform this year. CTO Bret Taylor, speaking at the Inside Social Apps conference, said that emphasis will be on HTML5-powered solutions, to maximize impact across all of the smartphone platforms.

Both iOS and Android have Web browsers capable of HTML5. The BlackBerry browser supports some HTML5, and Nokia/Symbian should really have an HTML5-capable browser sometime in 2011. The advantages of developing an HTML5-powered mobile site are clear: not only is there at least 125 million users just waiting to enjoy interactive HTML5 content on their phones, but it would also mean that Facebook could spend its time creating a standards-compliant and cross-platform mobile website, rather than developing individual apps for each of the smartphone platforms.

Don't forget the developers, either: imagine writing an HTML5 app or game that works across every smartphone. It would bring a whole new level of immersion to FarmVille and CityVille players -- you could play it on the train, in the bathroom, or in bed!

Google attacks content farms by altering search algorithm, early results are promising

Last week, to make inroads against the deluge of page-scraping content farms, Google carried out some changes to the way it ranks search results.

The slow-but-sure subsuming of search results by content farms begun last year, but only really came to a head in January with a post by Stack Overflow co-founder Jeff Atwood. An outcry from the community followed, and culminated in a post by Matt Cutts on the Official Google Blog.

Google still seems to be downplaying the problem, saying that most Search users simply weren't affected by the content farms. Cutts says that the recent changes will only alter "less than half a percent of search results."

The net result, though, is that you should find the original source of content when searching Google -- and judging by our own traffic graphs here at Download Squad (there are a lot of content farms that replicate our posts), it does seem to have made a difference.

Mozilla's HTML5 Game On finalists now online; go play, go vote!

Mozilla Labs' jury has selected the 35 finalists of its inaugural Game On 2010 competition. The games all use a combination of Open Web technologies -- HTML5, JavaScript, CSS, SVG and WebGL -- and while they have been designed for playing in Firefox 4, they should mostly work in Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer 9, too.

While the grand prizes will be handed out by a panel of expert judges, you're encouraged to play some games and vote for Community Choice award. You have until February 1 to vote, and all of the prizes will be awarded on February 3.

If you don't want to play all 35 (and admittedly, some of them are not all that great), take a look at Favimon (Lee loves this one) and TankWorld (check the sound effects!) Grave Danger is also strangely enjoyable -- perhaps it's the voodoo skulls, or something...

Finally, if 35 games weren't enough, you can also take a look at all of the entrants. Not a bad haul for emerging, beta technologies. Here's to Game On 2011!

[I actually tried some of these on the Android browser, and while they didn't work very well... they did work.]

Kongregate Arcade returns to the Android Market with some minor changes

After being removed from the Android Market for breaking the rules, the Kongregate Arcade app is back! Yet again can you enjoy easy access to the best source of Flash games on the Web.

Kongregate Arcade was originally pulled because it itself acted as a marketplace for apps -- or at least, it appeared to. In actual fact, the app was just a portal to all of the Flash games on the Kongregate site. The original app hid the browser's address bar (why is this possible?), which made it look like everything was occurring in-app.

The changes to the app make it more obvious that the app simply links to Web pages with Flash games, rather than appearing to play games from within the app. The Arcade will now also use the browser's cache to store temporary Flash files, rather than "explicitly downloading and managing games on the SD card."

A QR code to install the app is after the break.

Focus the taskbar and switch windows with the arrow keys in Windows 7

This week, we're running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The taskbar seems like it was meant to be used with the mouse only; it's a very visual thing, especially in Windows 7. But it turns out there's a way to "switch" to the taskbar and then work with it using the keyboard only! Hit Win+T to focus the taskbar, and then use the arrow keys to cycle between the icons. Whenever the focus switches to an application that's currently running, its Aero Peek pane will show up. To start an application that isn't running, press Enter.

What's nice about this system is that it takes your taskbar's orientations into account: for a vertical taskbar, Up/Down will switch windows, while Left/Right would activate the Aero Peek thumbnail pane; for a horizontal one, Left/Right would switch windows and Up/Down would activate the thumbnail pane.

This little nugget concludes our weekly Keyboard Tips series. I hope you've enjoyed it, and maybe even learned some new tricks! Check out Sebastian's list for a comprehensive rundown of many other hotkeys.

Katy Perry To Guest Star On 'How I Met Your Mother'

'Firework' singer will play Zoey's cousin, reports USA Today.
By Gil Kaufman

Katy Perry
Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

OK, so the whole "Sesame Street" thing didn't really work out, but that doesn't mean that Katy Perry has given up on her TV dreams. Just the opposite, in fact. After proving her comedic chops on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons" last year, the singer is poised to make her sitcom debut on "How I Met Your Mother" later this season, according to a report in USA Today.

According to the paper, the show will work the pop star into the "Mother" mix as the cousin of architecture-loving support character Zoey (Jennifer Morrison). Perry's character reportedly will be a beautiful and naïve woman whom the gang decide to call "Honey." The "Firework" singer's appearance might help to alleviate some of the angst suffered by fans of the Emmy-nominated sitcom after this week's shocking episode in which Lily (Alyson Hannigan) broke the news to hubby Marshall (Jason Segel) that his father had died of a heart attack.

"How I Met Your Mother" is no stranger to pop-ins from celebrities, having featured cameos by guest stars such as Nicole Scherzinger, Britney Spears, Rachel Bilson, Laura Bell Bundy and Carrie Underwood.

"Mother" has done an admirable job of working its star cameos into its unique comedic flow, employing Pussycat Doll Scherzinger as the buxom Jessica Glitter, who used to perform unintentionally erotic songs on a Canadian kids show with Robin Sparkles (Cobie Smulders).

And Spears, who was then fresh from a stay in UCLA's psychiatric ward, made a well-received comeback on the show portraying a ditzy dermatologist receptionist Abby. The role earned her a People's Choice Award nomination in 2009 for Favorite Scene Stealing Guest Star.

Are you looking forward to Katy Perry's "How I Met Your Mother" appearance? Tell us in the comments.

Gmail enables HTML5-powered desktop notifications

Google has just flipped the switch on a new feature in Gmail: desktop notifications for new email and instant messages. It only works in Google Chrome at the moment, but Google plans to bring it to other browsers that support HTML5, like Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9.

If you reload your Gmail tab, you should be prompted to enable the desktop notifications -- otherwise, head into Settings, scroll down to Desktop Notifications, and choose what kind of notifications you want. You can currently toggle chat, new mail, and new important mail -- but presumably, you'll be able to select which labels will produce notifications.

LibreOffice 3.3, the open source office suite, now available

LibreOffice -- the Document Foundation's fork of OpenOffice -- has come a long way since the project was first announced in September 2010. Today, the Foundation has announced that its first stable release, LibreOffice 3.3, is ready to download.

Among the many changes you'll find in version 3.3 are the arrival of new import filters and improvements to existing ones -- key features when you're trying to persuade users to migrate from competing suites like Microsoft Office, Works, or WordPerfect. Calc (the LibreOffice spreadsheet app) now boasts better Excel interoperability, SVG images can be opened and modified in Draw, and they can also be imported into Writer.

The Suite's PowerPoint alternative -- Presenter -- now ships with a presentation mode plug-in which makes controlling slideshows from your laptop a breeze. Testers will enjoy the addition of Experimental Mode, which you can toggle if you'd like to play with new features before they've officially been added to LibreOffice. It's a bit like the about:flags page in Google Chrome. LibreOffice 3.3 also sports a long list of interface and usability tweaks -- check out this page at the official site for a complete rundown.

Bruno Mars To Take Plea Deal In Drug Case

Grammy-nominated singer will pay a fine and complete community service to get charge dismissed.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage

Bruno Mars is set to take a plea deal in a drug possession case he picked up after getting caught with cocaine in Las Vegas in September, according to The Associated Press.

The "Just the Way You Are" crooner will pay a fine of $2,000 and complete drug counseling and 200 hours of community service. As long as Mars, born Peter Hernandez, does not get into any other scrapes for a year, his record will be conviction-free. Clark County District Attorney David Roger and Mars' lawyers David Chesnoff and Blair Berk said the singer is due in court in Las Vegas on February 4 so he can waive an evidentiary hearing to later plead guilty and be sentenced in state court.

"Bruno is very appreciative he is being given this opportunity as a first offender not to suffer any conviction and instead to have his charge dismissed," Berk told the AP. "He is taking all of this quite seriously."

Mars ran into trouble last fall at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel when a bathroom attendant noticed Mars with a "baggy of white powder substance." The singer tested positive for cocaine at the time of his arrest, and reportedly said he "did a foolish thing and has never used drugs before."

Putting the cocaine bust behind him isn't the only good thing coming up for Mars. The singer/songwriter is up for seven Grammy nominations, and will hit the stage at the big show. After the nominations were announced in December, MTV News caught up with Mars and his writing and production crew, the Smeezingtons, — who have put their touch on hits like Cee Lo's "F--- You" and B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" — and he said he was amped for the nods.

"But the fact [is] that we worked so hard this year. In a little tiny shack studio, we'd have B.o.B in there [writing] 'Nothin' on You' with us, Cee Lo writing 'F--- You' with us. The fact that it's being acknowledged by the Grammys is incredible," he said. "It's really making us feel like we did something. We're being acknowledged by the biggest."

The Grammys will air live on February 13.

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets revealed in new video

Major news from Google just hit at CES: Android 3.0, dubbed Honeycomb, has been revealed. It might be a leak, but the video is very well made and looks quite solid. While a new Android version is always a big deal, this leak is made all the more significant by the platform's apparent shift in focus. It's all about the tablets now.

While Android for phones is certainly not going away, the Honeycomb video features a bold statement, "Built Entirely for Tablet." And the UI really shows it, as you can see in the screencap above. Gmail looks different, but that's just one change. The whole interface underwent a radical change, to work with the tablet form factor. Other highlights from the video:
  • A 3D-looking task switcher
  • A massive software keyboard, quite reminiscent of a certain tablet that shall remain nameless (ahem)
  • Rich widgets on a roomy homescreen -- the Gmail widget looks basically like the current Gmail app
  • A strong emphasis on Google Books, including "live" widgets (scroll through books on the widget)
  • A tabbed browser, looking vaguely Chrome-like
  • A panorama-like view of YouTube with a 3D "wall" of thumbnails
  • Video-enabled Gtalk
  • Solid zoom-and-pan action with the new Maps app, including 3D buildings. This seems similar to Maps v5, but it looks so much better on a tablet.
  • Lots of futuristic-looking neon text
Exciting times indeed! Now let's see a review unit.

Tesla details Closed Loop battery recycling program for Europe

Tesla details 'Closed Loop' battery recycling program for Europe
Electric cars need big 'ol batteries, like the Model S pack shown above, and while we've seen time and again that those cells hold up better than expected for years, eventually they're going to need to be decommissioned. What happens then? Tesla already has a recycling program in the US and now it's detailing plans for a similar program in Europe in partnership with Umicore. Tesla's packs are now eligible for Umicore's "Closed Loop" process, disassembling them to remove easily re-used components and then refining the rest of the cell constituents into things like lithium cobalt oxide, which can be used in other batteries, and other various byproducts that can be used in cement or as fill. The whole process of breaking down and extracting all the components is actually profitable, so hopefully Euro drivers won't get hit with any pricey Roadster disposal fees when they trade up to a Model S.

Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Muse Added To Grammy Show

Usher, Jaden Smith, B.o.B, Janelle Monae and Lady Antebellum will also perform on February 13.
By Gil Kaufman

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with "Whip My Hair" last year, it's her brother, "Karate Kid" actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song "Never Say Never" last summer.

The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.

While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.

No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.

With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

Which Grammy performance are you most looking forward to? Talk about it in the comments!

Freaky Cows is an aquatic-themed bovine Time Waster

freakycows
As you may know, cows do not float. They tend to be heavier than water, so they sink. Not being a creature of the sea, when a cow drowns, it ceases to live. So if you like cows and encounter a bunch of cows that are on the verge of drowning, you might be moved to save them --and that's pretty much the premise of Freaky Cows.

You get a queue of objects and when you click the screen, the next object appears. The first thing on every level is some sort of a floating platform - it may be a long plank, or a bunch of logs loosely bunched together (these can float apart, as you can see in the screenshot).

Once the first floating object is in the water, the next click usually drops a cow on it, and it happily floats. Of course, saving just one cow isn't enough. Cows are social creatures, so you have to save the whole herd. When you drop the next cow on the floating plank, it changes the balance and causes the plank to sink deeper into the water. If you're not careful, the whole plank might tip over -- and there go the cows! You may receive extra planks later on, which you can use to bolster up your platform.

There are bulls, too, and a bull weighs four times as much as a cow -- so you need to be extra-careful with them. Happily, though, you don't have to save every cow. I mean, every cow is precious, but you can usually get away with saving only nine out of twelve or so and still pass the level.

Freaky Cows is highly recommended, and I greatly enjoyed the frantic mooing in the soundtrack.

Hands-on: Gentle Alarm for Android is a beautiful way to wake up

gentlealarm
When I listed Gentle Alarm as one of my top Android apps, I promised a more in-depth review -- and here it is! Here are the key features of the app that's been (successfully!) waking me up every morning for the past several weeks.

Profiles

One of the best concepts in Gentle Alarm is that not all alarms are exactly alike. The Profiles screen lets you set up individual alarm "types". As you can see, each profile has its own complete set of options: You can select whether or not you'd like to have a pre-alarm (more on these later), the duration of the alarm, the initial and final volume, the alarm tone (or MP3 tune), and more.

BlueGriffon: a cross-platform WYSIWYG HTML5 and CSS3 editor based on Firefox 4

If you want to get in on the HTML5 and CSS3 revolution, and would prefer some training wheels while you learn all of the new HTML tags and CSS transitions and transforms, look no further than BlueGriffon. It's free, open-source, and runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

BlueGriffon is built upon a recent version of Firefox 4. It uses the same Gecko page layout engine -- and in fact, lots of the UI elements look like they've come straight from Firefox 4. There are even add-ons to provide extra functionality, but they'll cost you 30 euros (about $40).

As far as actual usability goes, BlueGriffon is pretty good. The UI isn't exactly easy to use (but these things rarely are), but source editor is good -- and there's a built-in SVG creator that works well. You have access to all of the HTML5 tag types and CSS3 selectors, but not through the right-click context menu, which is annoying. The primary feature of BlueGriffon has to be the ability to see the effect of CSS3 selectors instantly -- or simply as a text editor that has a built-in Firefox 4 preview window.

According to WebUpd8, the nightly builds are the most stable. Also, if you're using Linux, grab the binary installer rather than the .deb, which apparently has some issues. The Windows build crashed quite a few times during my tests, too.

Google joins the privacy fray, offers up extension that blacklists tracking cookies

Hot on the heels of Mozilla's proposed Do Not Track solution, Google has launched Keep My Opt-Outs, an extension that blocks tracking cookies from targeted advertising providers.

The extension, which is simply a free download from the Chrome Web Store, takes an utterly brute-force approach to the problem. Gravity Guy is a fun one-button platformer -- Time Waster

gravityguy
Every once in a while, I like to write about a game that doesn't have a complicated set of controls. To be honest, most time wasters don't tend to be very complicated, perhaps except for those that require using both the mouse and the keyboard at the same time. But there's a category of time wasters that manage to hit the simplest UI possible, and still remain playable: The "one-button" games.

Gravity Guy is one such game; all you need is the SPACE key or the left mouse button. When the level starts, your little guy starts running across the screen, left to right. The level scrolls along, and pretty soon your guy is going to hit a step. In a normal platformer, you would just jump. But here there's no jumping - hitting space reverses gravity itself, and you find your guy suddenly running across the ceiling, full-speed ahead.

Now, just because it's a single-button game doesn't mean you don't have to stay alert: Hitting a step isn't the worst thing that can happen; just as often, the platform you're running on simply ends, and you fall into the abyss of space.

It's an intense game, but those who don't mind restarting a level over and over again will find it lots of fun.

Flip Mino HD with 802.11n WiFi hits the FCC

We'd been hearing rumors that a next-gen Flip camera with WiFi would hit sometime in the first half of the year, and what's this? A new Flip video camera with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n WiFi just popped up in the FCC database. Based on the shape of the FCC label, the location of the HDMI port, and the M3260 model number, it definitely looks like a member of the Mino family, but that's really all we know -- although if we had to bet, the 5GHz support is there so it can beam movies to the FlipShare TV. We'll see, we'll see.

Bruno Mars Latest In Line Of Producers-Turned-Performers

Seven-time Grammy nominee joins short list of producer/songwriters like Kanye West, Ne-Yo and Keri Hilson to see solo success.
By Gil Kaufman

In music, the producer and/or songwriter is usually some anonymous professional who toils away in the studio at all hours crafting the music and words that go into the mouth of the flashy star who then goes on to pick up all of the hardware at the annual awards show.

But sometimes that off-the-radar studio rat has so much material that he/she gets in the studio and earns some shine time of their own. Case in point: Bruno Mars. On Wednesday, the 25-year-old Hawaiian native became a Grammy Awards darling when he racked up seven nominations for his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, as well as his work on songs by other artists, including his production and songwriting on Cee Lo's "F--- You."

While Mars was initially a behind-the-scenes studio maven as one-third of the Smeezingtons production team, cranking out hits for Travie McCoy, Brandy, Sean Kingston, B.o.B, Flo Rida, the Sugababes and K'Naan, thanks to his solo hits "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade," he's now a bona fide star in his own right.

He's certainly not the first producer/songwriter to make that tricky crossover, especially in the world of hip-hop and R&B. Ne-Yo is perhaps the ultimate template for studio-to-stage success. After years as a go-to songwriter for everyone from Rihanna ("Take a Bow"), Beyoncé ("Irreplaceable") and Leona Lewis to Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Enrique Iglesias, Mary J. Blige and Faith Evans, Ne-Yo's solo smashes regularly hit the charts alongside the artists for whom he writes and produces.

Like Kanye West, Diddy and Keri Hilson, Mars has seemingly found a balance between writing and producing hit songs for others and creating some for himself. Then there are producers such as Jermaine Dupri, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, who've produced endless hits for others, but whose solo music careers have been steady, even if they've never quite reached the stratosphere of their collaborators.

One of the most successful contemporary triple threats is Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes, who has continued to release albums and tour with his writing/producing partner Chad Hugo under the N.E.R.D. banner while helming and penning dozens of hits for artists including Madonna, Jay-Z, Common, Ludacris, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg and Justin Timberlake.

With his career firing on all cylinders at the moment, after Wednesday night's Grammy nominations announcements, Mars said he's just trying to take it all in at the moment.

"We don't know how it feels yet, because we just got the word ... But the fact [is] that we worked so hard this year. In a little tiny shack studio, we'd have B.o.B in there [writing] 'Nothin' on You' with us, Cee Lo writing 'F--- You' with us. The fact that it's being acknowledged by the Grammys is incredible. It's really making us feel like we did something. We're being acknowledged by the biggest."

What do you think of Bruno Mars' success this year? Tell us in the comments!

Katy Perry Unveils Artwork For New Single, 'E.T.'

'Stay tuned for a new music video,' Teenage Dream singer teases.
By Jocelyn Vena

As expected, Katy Perry is set to release the track "E.T." as her next Teenage Dream single. It follows in the footsteps of smashes like "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework."

Perry made the announcement on her Facebook page, releasing artwork for the single. In the black-and-white photograph, Perry sports blunt bangs, a heavy cat eye and a top that appears to be made of pleather and fish-scale sequins.

"Here's a sneak peek of the artwork for 'E.T.,' the next single off 'Teenage Dream'!" the message says. "Stay tuned for a new music video and remixes coming soon."

While little else is known about the video, Perry has made it her mission to keep releasing memorable clips. "I'm looking forward to making music videos on this new album," she said late last year about Teenage Dream. "There's a story to the songs. ... I'm really excited about ... making those music videos that are going to be larger than life."

Perry has been playing "E.T." live recently. Last month at Z-100's Jingle Ball, the spirited singer joked about the spacey dance track, telling the crowd, "This next song is about falling in love with a foreigner, like far away ... not even in England."

In addition to prepping her next single, Perry has been busy tweeting up a storm about her Grammy performance and California Dreams Tour, which kicks off next month. "Cotton Candy angel is working up a treat you'll NEVER forget for GRAMMY'S & TOUR!" she wrote earlier this week.

Is "E.T." a good choice for Katy Perry's next single? Sound off below!

Google Chrome dev gets password sync -- again

Google Chrome password sync has been a long time coming, first taking shape in May 2010 Chromium builds. It's popped up before in official Chrome builds, but never appeared to be functional. Now, however, password sync has come back to the Dev Channel -- and it seems to be working for some. On my own system, Chrome's status indicator spun endlessly and I was never able to authenticate -- forcing me to cancel the process and leave my sync options as they were. Sebastian, however, successfully logged in and activated password sync with no problem.

With password sync so close being finished, maybe Google will start working on letting us sync our custom search engines...

Egypt enters communication blackout with disruption to internet, SMS, and BlackBerry messaging

We don't know what exactly is going on over in Egypt, but the country's government seems to have decided that keeping in touch with the outside world is no longer desirable and has almost completely shut down internet, SMS, and BlackBerry communications. It's not surprising, therefore, that reports are emerging in rather piecemeal form at the moment, though Renesys has hard data showing that almost all routes for exchanging internet traffic with the country have been shut down, with only Noor Group excepted from the block -- a move the internet analytics company theorizes might have been motivated by a desire to keep the Egyptian Stock Exchange online. The reasons for this blackout remain open to speculation and interpretation -- most of which, we remind you, has better destinations than your favorite tech blog -- but its content is clearly an extreme step for any government to take. Check out the links below for further details.

Vuze 4.6 adds uTP support, speeds up torrent downloads

Vuze is a solid torrent downloader, especially for less-savvy users. Its built-in media streaming and transcoding features make it a nice start-to-finish app for downloading and playing videos on just about any device. With the release of version 4.6, Vuze has added even more playback kung-fu, as well as one very important piece of bittorrent support.

Both the free and plus versions of Vuze now download torrents in a more network-friendly way, thanks to uTP support (which first arrived in uTorrent back in 2008). Several code tweaks were also made which have resulted in faster downloads, and the Vuze Crew has also tidied up the sidebar, making it easier to access the features users lean on most. Less-used options have been tucked out of the way. Vuze Plus subscribers can also utilize the Play Now feature, which analyzes a video's download speed and bitrate and begins playing when Vuze can "safely begin continuous playback."

Vuze is a free download for Windows and Mac -- Vuze Plus will run you around will run you about $25 per year.

For fans looking for details on Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" single, out in two weeks, pal Perez Hilton gave the world a sneak peek of the tune's opening lyrics on Thursday (January 27).

Hilton posted these lyrics on his website: "Don't be a drag/ Just be a queen."

"I just posted a big surprise on my website!!!! " the gossip blogger tweeted after posting the line. "Oh, and if you're a @ladygaga fan, you REALLY wanna go to [my website] RIGHT NOW! #Leaking"

Later in the day, in another post, Hilton revealed more lyrics: "No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life/ I'm on the right track, baby, I was born to survive."

His post comes hours after Gaga herself teased that she was planning to gift her fans with some of the single's lyrics, tweeting, "#thankgod4gaga is trending!? More like #thankgod4monsters! Maybe I should leak the lyrics to Born This Way today, whatdya say #leakitgaga?"

She belted out a bit of the song at the VMAs back in September. Donning her now-infamous meat dress, she sang, "I'm beautiful in my way/ 'Cause God makes no mistakes/ I'm on the right track/ Baby, I was born this way."

In his post, Hilton also revealed that he's heard the song and the album and that all of Gaga's Little Monsters won't be disappointed. "Get ready world!!!! Here she comes!!!! We've heard the song and - it MORE than lives up to the hype!!!" he wrote. "We've been holding a big secret from you all, which is we've heard the whole album. We've been there every step of the way and.... This album is going to change culture! When we can say more, we will! For now.... Don't be a drag, just be a queen!!!"

Gaga got fans hyped for the May album release of the same name on Wednesday, when she thanked them for making the song title "Edge of Glory" a Twitter trend. "Ok. Firstly, yes I love Nutella (with Banana+Wonderbread) who doesn't?" she wrote. "Secondly, I can't believe Edge of Glory was trending, sneakymonsters! Thirdly, I need a beer with my name on it cause the last 72hrs gave me a creative hangover."

Are you excited for "Born This Way"? Let us know in the comments!

Ubuntu 11.04 switches to LibreOffice in latest daily builds

Back in September 2010, when Google, Novell and others announced the LibreOffice fork of OpenOffice, Canonical frontman Mark Shuttleworth said "The Ubuntu Project will be pleased to ship LibreOffice from The Document Foundation in future releases." In recent 11.04 Natty Narwhal daily builds, the change has finally taken place.

Download yourself a new Ubuntu 11.04 daily build .ISO, and you'll have LibreOffice installed from the get-go -- no PPA required. Natty is currently in the early stages, of course, so expect a few bumps in the road if you decide to take it for a test drive.
